Does an internal pelvic health physiotherapy examination hurt?

Our pelvic health physiotherapists fully explain and communicate with you throughout your examination. If at any time you feel any discomfort or pain it is important that you communicate with us so that we can ensure your examination is comfortable. We will continuously check in with you throughout your physiotherapy visit and you can decline or stop assessment or treatment at any time, if you wish.

FAQ

What is an internal pelvic health physiotherapy exam?

  • An internal vaginal and/or rectal examination is used to assess the strength and function of your pelvic floor and pelvic organs, and position of your tailbone.

  • The pelvic floor muscles run around the opening of the urethra, vagina (in women), and rectum.

  • The gold standard for assessing the pelvic floor muscles is via an examination which is performed with one gloved finger inserted into the vaginal or rectal canal.

  • Pelvic physiotherapists are trained in both internal and external evaluation and treatment techniques.

Do I need to reschedule my appointment  if I have my period?

No, you do not have to reschedule! You can come to pelvic health physiotherapy while on your period and there is no reason we cannot perform a pelvic exam while you are menstruating, if you are comfortable with this. The only time we need to avoid a pelvic exam is if you have a UTI or yeast infection, if there are other precautions mentioned from your doctor or midwife, or if you are uncomfortable.

What should I wear to my first appointment?

Please wear something you are comfortable moving around in! We recommend something stretchy and comfortable.

Do I have to have an internal pelvic health physiotherapy exam?

It is not a requirement to have an internal exam, but it does give us the most information about how the pelvic floor muscles are functioning. If you are uncomfortable with having an internal exam performed, a lot can still be assessed by observing and/or palpating the pelvic floor muscles externally. Please talk to us about any concerns you may have and we will ensure that your appointment feels safe and comfortable. Depending on your individual circumstances and/or what brings you to physiotherapy, an internal pelvic exam may or may not be indicated.
